October build notes: what we're learning

A month into publishing, here's what's holding up and what's changing.

A month into publishing this newsroom, it's worth saying what's holding up, what's changing, and what we're carrying into next month. Build notes are only useful if they're honest, so here's the honest version.

What's holding up

Writing weekly is doing what we hoped: it's forcing clarity. Two venture theses got sharper the moment they had to survive a paragraph — you can't hide fuzzy thinking in print. The discipline is the value, even before anyone reads a word. And the format is working: short, plain, one idea per piece. When we tried to say three things at once, the draft told on us.

What's changing

We're writing less about the studio and more about the work. The early pieces explained what a venture studio is; going forward, the balance shifts to build notes from the ventures themselves — what we're testing, what broke, what we'd do differently. Less "about us," more "here's what happened." We're also learning to kill drafts faster. A piece that takes three rewrites to sound honest probably isn't honest yet.

What we're carrying forward

Three things. First: validation before scale, always — it's the cheapest lesson in the business and we keep relearning it. Second: the unglamorous middle is where ventures are won, so we're staffing for it, not around it. Third: build in the open, even when it's uncomfortable, because the alternative is building on unexamined assumptions.

November's notes will come from deeper in the work. If you're building something and want a studio that publishes its thinking — you know where to find us.
